DEPARTMENT OF STATISTICS

Mission

The mission of the Department of Statistics is to promote statistical learning, research and consulting at Oklahoma State University, to develop statistical skills in departmental majors at all levels, and to instill an understanding of theoretical statistical concepts in departmental graduate majors.

Vision

The Department of Statistics aspires to excellence in teaching, research and service. The department will continue to produce quality statisticians at the graduate and undergraduate levels. We will promote multidisciplinary scientific activity within the university and the state.

Goals, Critical Success Factors, Objectives, and Strategies

Goal 1: Recruit, retain, and graduate a larger, academically well-prepared student body.

Critical Success Factors:

  • Increase the number of statistics faculty on the Stillwater campus by one.
  • Obtain a faculty member on Tulsa budget to teach our courses there and to provide consulting services to COM as well as OSU-Tulsa.
  • Increase the number of graduate statistics majors by seeking a 20% increase in funding in 5 years for graduate assistantships.
  • Increase the number of undergraduate statistics majors by 20% in five years.

Objectives:

Objective 1.1: Compete for the best and brightest statistics prospects for our undergraduate and graduate programs.
Strategies:
  • Contact regional high schools and colleges for names of top students in mathematics and statistics and have faculty personally contact those students.
  • Continue faculty visits to state and regional colleges for the purpose of recruiting graduate students.
  • Monitor graduate applications and arrange personal contacts from our faculty.
Objective 1.2: Increase the number of graduate degrees awarded in statistics.
Strategies:
  • Seek new sources of funding for recruiting new students as graduate assistants.
  • Actively encourage our best MS students to pursue a Ph.D. in our program.
Objective 1.3: Create support systems that enhance retention and graduation rates among undergraduate and graduate majors.
Strategies:
  • Promote our program of faculty mentors for undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Employ all high-quality undergraduate majors in the Department.
  • Plan and implement processes to ensure timely completion of degrees at all levels.

Goal 2: Strive for excellence in scholarly endeavors of faculty and graduate and undergraduate majors.

Critical Success Factors:

  • Fill the available faculty positions with persons with academic potential.
  • Increase the number of statistics faculty on the Stillwater campus by one.
  • Obtain a faculty member on Tulsa budget to teach our courses there and to provide consulting services to COM as well as OSU-Tulsa.
  • Increase number of research papers submitted for publication with a graduate student as one of the authors by 20% in five years.
  • Increase the number of internships for undergraduate and graduate statistics majors by 20% in five years.
  • Maintain at least one undergraduate as a member in the University scholar’s program.

Objectives:

Objective 2.1: Expand and strengthen the undergraduate and graduate statistics programs.
Strategies:
  • Expand undergraduate and graduate internship activities.
  • Seek prominent scholarships for undergraduate majors.
  • Continue to seek high-quality, postgraduate employment for our statistics majors.
  • Encourage statistics graduates into continuing graduate studies.
  • Increase the number of graduate students supported by external funding.
  • Seek a level of net TA compensation that makes our department competitive among the Big 12 statistics departments.
  • Fill vacant faculty positions appropriately.
Objective 2.2: Promote faculty excellence in teaching, research, and consulting.
Strategies:
  • Maintain the strength and breadth of disciplines in the department by recruiting faculty who are strong in the necessary statistical areas.
  • Absorb, through retirement, the adjunct faculty positions currently shared with other departments and create a social science statistics faculty position housed solely within the department.
  • Encourage an increased number of quality research proposal sumbissions.
  • Encourage faculty collaboration with others, whether this collaboration is multidisciplinary or intradisciplinary.
  • Partner with business, industry, and government entities to support our programs and provide statistical services to these entities that will allow them to further the cause of economic development.

Goal 3: Engage with constituents to enhance statistical understanding and the quality of life for students and the community.

Critical Success Factors:

  • Increase total dollars received where a statistics department faculty member was a participant or a co-principle investigator on a multidisciplinary grant by 20% over the next five years.
  • Increase the number of multidisciplinary grants submitted by 20% in five years.
  • Increase the number of students and classes serviced by Statistics Learning and Instructional Center (SLIC) by 20% in five years.

Objectives:

Objective 3.1: Promote the availability of departmental and university resources that support student learning.
Strategies:
  • Maintain and expand the role of SLIC in tutoring undergraduate students.
  • Advertise and recruit for the new analytic minor in statistics
  • Develop an assessment tool to measure student learner outcomes with statistics service courses.
Objective 3.2: Continue statistical consulting for graduate students and researchers across campus.
Strategies:
  • Continue to consult for the Agricultural Experiment Station.
  • Continue a high level of faculty membership on dissertation and thesis committees across campus.
  • Seek to expand consulting agreements to various colleges within the OSU system.
  • Have faculty serve as co-principle investigators on multidisciplinary grants.
Objective 3.3: Continue to advertise and highlight the department’s achievements and those of outstanding faculty, students, and alumni through the publication of the departmental newsletter.
Strategies:
  • Maintain an up-to-date database of departmental alumni and friends.
  • Solicit information for future newsletters from alumni in each newsletter.
  • Include administrators, regents, and local legislators in the newsletter mailings.
  • Solicit new funds from alumni.
No student input was obtained since there were no guidelines to do so in the planning outline provided by Central Administration.
